Importance of Education
One of our core values is excellence in care and treatment. Maintaining this standard necessitates continual health professional education among BCMCF-L staff, other health professionals in Lesotho, and visiting medical professionals from other countries.
Continuing Medical Education
Weekly continuing professional development courses are held every Friday at the Centre of Excellence. Topics include journal clubs on recently published articles, case presentations, and updates on relevant topics. All disciplines are invited to attend and present. BCMCF-L physicians and nurses also regularly participate in a monthly educational activity of the Lesotho Medical Association: the Learning and Sharing Forum.
Trainings and Mentorship
Health care workers in Lesotho receive one-on-one mentoring from BCMCF-L physicians, nurses, psychologists, and pharmacists on proper pediatric HIV care and treatment services. One-week clinical attachments are also offered at the COE and SCOEs which include didactic education and practical skills development in our high volume clinics. All BCMCF-L clinics welcome health professionals – nurses, doctors, laboratory technicians, and counselors. Social work students and nurse clinician students have also participated in clinical field work.
Ongoing theoretical and practical training is given to intern doctors at Queen ’Mamohato Memorial Hospital. Physicians at our SCOEs also support patient care and clinical education at district hospitals in Botha-Bothe, Leribe, Mohale’s Hoek, Mokhotlong, and Qacha’s Nek.
Visiting Scholar Program
For many years, BCMCF-L has offered a visiting scholar program for pediatric residents from the United States. This program presents an invaluable opportunity for an immersive global health experience and at the same time benefits our full-time staff with fresh ideas, knowledge, and enthusiasm. Most visiting scholars serve for one month at our COE where they see patients under the supervision of an attending physician. We strive to include our visiting scholars in all aspects of patient care and educational activities including outreach.
